Animation Advancements

Gone are the days of cumbersome round trips to external applications! Unreal Engine 5.4 brings significant updates to its animation toolset, allowing seamless character rigging and animation authoring directly within the engine.

With the introduction of the Experimental Modular Control Rig feature, animators now have the power to construct animation rigs from understandable modular parts, simplifying complex processes.

Additionally, the addition of Automatic Retargeting streamlines the reuse of bipedal character animations, I made a video about this it allows you retarget animations of characters within seconds.

In the realm of gameplay animation, Unreal Engine 5.4 introduces the highly-anticipated Motion Matching feature, now Production-Ready after rigorous testing in Fortnite Battle Royale across all platforms. ( A video about this is in the works )

This flexible framework presents a fresh approach to animation selection and transition, promising enhanced performance and memory scalability. Furthermore, the introduction of Choosers empowers developers to drive animation selection based on dynamic game context, opening doors to even more immersive gameplay experiences.

Nanite, the virtualized micropolygon geometry system at the heart of Unreal Engine 5, receives substantial enhancements in version 5.4.

The addition of Tessellation and software variable rate shading (VRS) via Nanite compute materials promises significant performance gains, while enhancements to Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) ensure a consistent output across diverse platforms. I made a video about this check it out below.

Developer iteration

Unreal Engine 5.4 introduces a plethora of tools aimed at streamlining developer workflows. The innovative Unreal Cloud DDC offers a self-hosted cloud storage solution for efficient data sharing, while the Production-Ready Multi-Process Cook dramatically reduces content conversion times. Additionally, the Unreal Build Accelerator provides scalable distributed compilation for C++ developers, promising enhanced efficiency and productivity.

Expanding Horizons in Media and Entertainment

Motion graphics enthusiasts will rejoice with the introduction of the Experimental Motion Design mode, tailored for authoring complex 2D motion graphics directly within Unreal Engine 5.4.

Filmmakers exploring virtual production will benefit from updates to the Virtual Camera tool, now Production-Ready and offering support for Android platforms.

Furthermore, improvements to Linux support and enhancements in cloth simulation with the introduction of a new USD importer further expand the creative possibilities within Unreal Engine 5.4.
